Cardrona River Water Intake Weir

Client: Mt. Cardrona Station

Date: 2023

Description:

As part of the Mt Cadrona Station subdivision works, additional potable water capacity was required for the Cadrona township.

Strata Civil were engaged to carry out construction of the weir that sits below the Cadrona River, taking water to a pump then through to various stages of treatment and storage.

The works conducted by Strata included;

  • Sheetpiling and de-watering of cofferdam below the river water level.

  • Construction of Insitu Concrete foundation

  • Installation of pre-cast weir

  • Re-instatement of surrounding area after construction works.

Several challenges overcome included;

  • Environmentally sensitive work site. Very limited silt discharge allowed. Water quality was tested and careful planning ensured all requirements were met.

  • Undulating river floor with large boulders and softer silts. This required pre-drilling prior to sheetpiles being driven.

  • Variable river flow. The river is very susceptible to change in volume due any amount of rain or snow during the time of construction, therefore we had to ensure our temporary works would be able to withstand these larger flows, as well as ensuring the remainder of our site is protected from scouring and erosion.
